Immunology Terms:

Week 1

1. Antigen- a substance capable of stimulating an immune response or reaction.

i.e. Those who tested positive, displayed the antigen for SARS-CoV-2.

2. Inoculation-a means of preventing disease by introducing the disease causing microorganism or virus into the body in small quantities.

i.e. In ancient history, the inoculation of small pox was eventually what dropped the R0 rate.

3. APC- (antigen presenting cell) a macrophage that has ingested a foreign cell and displays the antigen on its surface.

i.e. The patient displayed symptoms of a common cold but was tested for other diseases just to make sure, upon review of her lab tests, she had high levels of dendritic cells which is the APC of influenza virus.

Week 2 (9/11/20)

 1. Hematopoiesis- a process that red blood cells and lymphocytes undergo to allow for continuous renewal of these cells from self-renewing hematopoietic stem cells.

2. Apoptosis- programmed cell death
3. Autoantibodies- immune proteins that mistakenly target and react with a person's own tissues and organs; failure to distinguish between "self" and "non-self."

i.e Celiac disease caused by anti-transglutaminase antibodies
